You are currently using the old showRSS. Please move to the new showRSS as soon as possible. Learn more.

Moving forward

showRSS has existed for well over 6 years already. Phew! That's a long time to be around on the internet (where, by the way, nobody knows you're a dog).

What used to be good practices and good technologies aren't so good and modern anymore, and what used to be acceptable code is not anymore. The solution? Build showRSS from the ground up, of course.

So, there we go: there's a new showRSS! You can try it today by browsing to showrss.info. Users with accounts on the old showRSS can migrate their account to the new showRSS by using the "Migrate Account" area in the new website. Just enter your current showRSS username and password, and a fresh account with the same username and password will be created in the new showRSS, and most of the show selections will be copied. Before doing so, please read the instructions carefully. Contact us on Twitter if you have questions or run into issues.

Not everything is good news: for the sake of simplicity, reliability and to ensure that showRSS can last longer, some problematic features are now gone: Transmission Push does not exist anymore in the new site. This blog has also disappeared, in favor of the Twitter feed. The show request flow has been changed in favor of a much better one that needs less manual intervention. Overlaps with wrong shows should not happen anymore, and information should be more accurate. Also, some features, such as the schedule, are still work in progress, but are slowly coming together.

This current website you're reading this on right now will disappear on January 31st, 2017. Please migrate now to prevent losing your account.

Thank you for keeping this service/site alive.

I find quite annoying that some shows are not yet available. It means I would (if I migrate) have to keep track to see when they are added.

I'm not on twitter and don't want to be so I prefer this blog (especially as they have removed RSS feeds).

I'm glad to ear the show request flow is improved. But it looks like there is no list with added shows. I would love if there was an RSS (or Atom) feed with a new entry for each show added to the site. So it's possible to know when a show is added (and maybe discover shows I don't know yet). The "Latest added TV shows" section on the old site was OK but it's necessary to look at it from time to time and if too long some added shows are not in the list anymore (as it is only 10 items long).

Will shows be added to the old site (before it is closed) or only to the new one?

My account will not migrate nothing happens would it not be simpler to give user a new invite token?
showRSS
11/27/2015
@eyeacoub: please contact me on Twitter or through email so that I can sort that out.

Giving out new invite tokens to everyone is not a good idea because it would let people create accounts with the same username as other people are using in the old showRSS, causing a lot of confusion and bother. Plus, the migration process migrates the list over to the new showRSS ;)

Can we use Catch for mac instead of the transmission push? or it will be disabled too? By the way, we may be a small number of users using the feature, but I think Push to transmission is the BEST feature showrss has by far. I don't think a showrss site without transmission push will have any use for me, so I'll stick with the old site until you pull the plug on it.

Does removal of schedule mean I wont be able to see upcoming releases on my calendar?

First time I've ever heard of "transmission push"... I could be mistaken but it seems that it does the same job as the RSS Downloader in uTorrent? I use that and my shows auto-download almost right after they are available so it seems sort of redundant...

WOW I keep hearing about the benefits of switching your account to the new website! Frankly I don't see the benefit of doing so. I personally would not continue my membership or donations to this project without even half of the functionality that it has on the original site. Taking away the ability to have a transmission push, schedules, and more would be a shame and a disappointment to everyone. Why fix what isn't broke?? If it works and people are happy with the wonderful service that you provide, why change it. Just reading some of the concerns and the out right begging to keep functionality, would seem like the logical thing to do. After all, appealing to the masses and the people that keep this project alive is what makes good common sense to me. Not rocket science, from an entrepreneur's point of view, such as myself. Keep it simple and if it works, don't change what's not broke, I always tell my employees. I haven't changed the way I do business since 1998 and I'm still here going strong. Just a thought!!! Anyhow I admire your dedication to this project, don't let it die.
Zombi

The fact you make a new site is good, shows you still care about this service. But taking away half of the functions... Hmmm... Not so sure about that. Seems like step backwards, if you ask me.

Migration seems like a PITA. Some shows will not be migrated?? They may need to be added again which may happen when they start airing again?? Ughhh... The whole point of automating things with RSS feed is so I do not have to remember to do this shit and shows just get downloaded.

Also it says that once I migrate the old feed will stop working. Ugh... That sucks. I'd give it a try, but it seems if it doesn't work out then I can't fallback to the old feeds again because the feeds will no longer work. Seriously? Why? You really want to encourage people to try, make it so they can continue to use the old feeds as well. As it is now, I will not even try as I'd rather stay with the old site that in know works than go to something that May or may not work, especially if it means that trying it disables the old feeds immediately.

I don't know what I'll do without Transmission Push. Kind of undoes the point? I don't understand why a new site without better and improved features ONLY. Admin had to know that Transmission Push was going to be a HUGE problem? Unless there's a little man in my laptop who manually is transferring each and every show I have on push, and admin either pays this little man or has to feed him or something to keep him working....then why do away with I cannot imagine isn't an automated process?

Is this a carved into stone issue? I see that almost every single comment is mentioning this same problem with the end of Transmission Push?

I switched to Transmission when I found showrss...perchance, have you considered speaking with the folks at Transmission to see if they would be interested in maybe splitting the workload or helping pay the salary of the little troll in my laptop that is so overpaid you're pink-slipping him?
nhubi
12/08/2015
Well don't use transmission push, but I do use the scheduler and I've never had an issue with it or seen any errors. Personally I'll be sticking with the 'old' site until I have no option since it has features and functionality I like whilst the updated version obviously does not.

Seriously if it is just a case of not wanting to keep up the blog then abandon it and use twitter, and enable the less labour intensive request system, just keep it with the features that already work and are wanted and used by your membership.

Since if I do migrate I can't come back, I'm afraid you're going to have to move me out of here with a satchel bomb and a pickaxe.

If anyone would like some help setting up Flexget with ShowRSS and Transmission, I could try to put together some kind of step-by-step guide for those of you who want a 100% automated, hands-free, no hassle alternative to the Transmission push feature.

Setting up Flexget was NOT easy for me, and I know how hard it is to find answers to YOUR setup-specific questions. But honestly, I am SO glad I did not give up on trying to figure Flexget out. I do not EVER have to touch or think about any of it at all at this point. And for shows that ShowRSS doesn't have or won't have on the new site, you can use other sites (KA, for example) to generate a show-specific RSS feed from a search query.

Flexget IS the "little man in my laptop who manually is transferring each and every show".

I appreciate all the hard work and effort it takes to have this service. I've dealt with maintaining a website with an ever changing database so I know the amount of work it takes.

That said I will say that not bringing all my shows over during migration is NOT acceptable. The very reason I use the site is to keep track of my shows and be able to add new ones easily. The RSS feed is vital as it's the only way I get my shows in uTorrent.

Make it an easy transition for everyone - get all the shows over THEN announce the migration.

I won't be migrating until I know ALL the shows are on the new site and I don't have to do any extra time wasting work making sure I don't miss any.

All this noise about Transmission Push when there are a myriad other ways to achieve the same thing! My concern is all the shows I've got queued up on the feed to alert me when they start airing again... It's not a lot of shows but it does seem like a fairly big step backward. I'll need to find somewhere else to log them so I can be alerted that they are airing and then, I guess, come back here and re-add them. Hmmm.

The new showsRSS site looks good but still needs more added to it.
- You only have your personal feed. Hopefully it works with Catch by coping the Personal URL to Catch's preferences. Perhaps some additional instructions on configuring Catch would help.
- The iCal feed was great as it gave an upcoming (1 week in advance) schedule feed! Would like to have that on the new site. Have an additional feed link stating such underneath the personal link.
- It would be nice to have the orphan list on the new site so that you can check to see if a show is pending before requesting it on the new site.
The current site in my opinion was and still is more informative and has way more features than the new site. Hopefully changes to the new site will encompass these suggestions.

I think I won't switch to the new ShowRSS for now, will wait until all shows are tracked on the new platform or at least until the very last possible moment. For me it's important to rely on this site to track and download all shows that are relevant to me, if I have to check which shows are missing and need to track them separately, this platform won't make any sense to me and I'll have to search for another one that does.

Iagree with a few others when they say they will stay here until the other site has all the shows and so forth. I did go check it out briefly and thought about migrating....that was until I read all the things that would be immediately terminated for me on this site IF I did go through with the migration. Therefore, I did not migrate. As others have mentioned, if we could migrate so we could have a period to explore and play around with the new site during the transition period and as you add to it but WITHOUT losing all we have on this site (meaning everything staying active) so we can continue to enjoy the use of this wonderful site. I love this site....sometimes just logging in to make sure I have not missed seeing an episode I like or, if I have, I can find out exactly what episodes and so forth. I also find this site sooooo simple to navigate. You have done a marvelous job here as far as I am concerned.....if it were up to me, i would have never said anything needed to be changed :D

What is Transmission Push?
TiPi
01/17/2016
@Mark : with RSS it's the Torrent app that looks for infos about files to download. (some one correct me if I'm wrong)
Transmission is so light it doesn't have RSS implemented.
The way Push work is that showwRSS.info connect to your Transmission app and add magnet links.
With RSS the new file check is on the torrent app side, with push it's on the website side.
In a way, RSS is more secure as you don't give access to your torrent app.

For those asking about invites for the new site. You don't need one. Just create a new account on the old site. Migrate that account to the new site. There you go, you now have an account on the new site.

I did it that way as we'll even though I have an account on the old site. I didn't want to migrate that. So just created a second account migrate that, so now I have active account on both sites and I can experiment with the new site while continuing to use the old to get most of my shows.

It's been 4 months since the first post about this. It seems new shows are no longer being added to the old site, and the new site is not finished, so neither is in working condition. Just curious what the timeline is to finish the new site, as it seems pointless migrating to a non-working site.
showRSS
03/02/2016
@Yanta: On what basis do you claim that the new website is a non working website? How about the tens of thousands of users that are using it exclusively in replacement of the old website?
Yanta
03/03/2016
Gosh, I didn't want to start a war. From the migrate account page...
----
Calendar & episode name support is not finished yet. The schedule feature is now present, but is not nearly as functional as it was in the old showRSS.
Some TV shows are not yet available on the new showRSS.
----
So, as I said, shows are not baing added to the old ShowRSS, and new ones are not available on the new ShowRSS, and stuff that is "finished" or "fully functional" on the old ShowRSS is not finished on the new one.
So both sites are sort of "in between". I wasn't trying to be nasty, though it appears I got taken that way!

So, again, my question WITH ALL DUE RESPECT is...is there a timeline when the new site will be finished?
showRSS
03/03/2016
@Yanta: have you bothered actually migrating to the new showRSS and exploring how these limitations affect your use of the website?

Currently, the only significant missing feature is a lack of RSS/iCal for the schedule, nothing else. Is that a dealbreaker for you? Is it really such a significant feature that it renders the new showRSS unsuitable for you?

As for new shows: they are added as they return to air. Naturally.

@Meg: most users use the site because of the feeds, which gives a similar result as the transmission push. That's why you would use it.
Dropper
04/12/2016
Going back to the messages to Yanta on 03/03, you say that "the only significant missing feature is a lack of RSS/iCal for the schedule, nothing else". Does this mean that we can currently view the schedule on the website but that there's no way whatsoever to add it to online calendars?
If so, do you think you're likely to develop this feature again at some point?

Also, I've Googled it and was unable to find any further info on it but what exactly is transmission push? Seeing as everyone's complaining about it being missing...

Finally, as always, thank you for ShowRSS and all the hard work that goes into it!
showRSS
04/12/2016
@Dropper: yes, and yes. You can see the schedule on the new website, and iCal/RSS for the schedule will eventually be available, before the old website closes down.

Transmission Push is a very 'niche' feature where showRSS would connect to the torrent clients of some users to add new episodes, instead of the other way around as most users do (where torrent clients connect to showRSS to look up recent episodes).

Just like the people above using catch. Namespaces, magnets, raw names, nothing makes a difference. And as i cant tell the difference with data within the feed i have had to rollback to old showrss.

I can't migrate my account because my username doesn't match. I can't create a matching username because my old one is three characters and the new system has a four character minimum.

I use a program call Catch to automatically download the new shows from showRSS. I tried upgrading to the new site and setting it up the same way as I did before but the new Feed Url doesn't seem to work. Does anyone else use this program and know if the new showRSS will work with Catch?

@Markcdias: you need to download and install Catch again (new version)
